Iztuzu beach is not only a stunning, unspoilt beach, it has a story. It is one of the places where the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtle nests. Between the eighties and today, the beach has been under threat of privatisation and commercialisation several times.
Thanks to the commitment of an English lady, that has been living in Dalyan for many years, the beach was declared a protected area in the eighties. This lady, known by the name ‘Kaptan’ June, who is in her nineties now, is still committed to this cause, helped by many local and international supporters.
June is also the founder of the turtle rescue centre. Wounded and ill turtles are brought in from far away, to be treated and cured. The centre is open to visitors without an entrance fee, but it runs on donations and volunteers. A visit (and a donation) is absolutely worthwhile.
