Dalyan Kaunos

The river Calbys – the current Dalyan river – used to be the natural border between the ancient civilisations Caria and Lycia. Initially Kaunos was a separate city-state; later it was part of Caria and after that of Lycia. Kaunos was a major seaport, which history goes back to the 10th century BC. By the formation of Iztuzu beach and the silting up of the former Gulf of Dalyan (from 200 BC), Kaunos is now about 8 km from the coast.
